EXHIBITION BY
ARTISTS OF WORCESTER COUNTY

JUNE THE NINTH
THROUGH JUNE THE THIRTIETH

l 935

WORCESTER ART MUSEUM
WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS

FOREWORD

It is most gratifying to see the interest which this exhibition
by Worcester County artists, resumed after a lapse of five
years, has aroused in the community. Instead of having an
independent, no-jury show as was the case in the last three
local exhibitions, it was thought advisable to invite a jury to
select the paintings to be exhibited. The jury, under the Chair-
manship of O. Victor Humann, Senior Instructor in Painting
at the Museum School, consisted of two other members:
Beaumont Newhall, State Administrator of the FERA Public
Works of Art Project in Massachusetts, and Gayton Whitmore>
Director and proprietor of the Grace Home Galleries in Boston.
Thisliberal and impartial group has made the following selection
of 104 items from a total of 240 submitted. The Museum
authorities have chosen to have no voice in the matter, wishing
to abide implicitly and finally by the selection of the jury.

All artists in Worcester County or those who have at some
previous time resided and worked here were asked to submit
not more than four items to the jury. Although no prizes
are awarded the Museum authorities have decided to invite
a limited number of artists from this exhibition to participate
in the Second Biennial Exhibition of American Painting of
To-day to be held at the Museum from November 1 -December
15, 1935. It is hoped that in the future this process of selection
may lead to a wider recognition throughout the country of
our local artists.

Francis Henry Taylor

Director.
